## Doctoral Research

**Dissertation focus: Privacy-preserving deployment of large language models in clinical workflows.**

Healthcare AI systems can operate under HIPAA Business Associate Agreements (BAAs), but most external tools — including web search and current-literature retrieval — are not BAA-covered. Any query containing protected health information (PHI) must therefore be reliably de-identified before it leaves a secure environment. Insufficient de-identification forces a tradeoff between PHI exposure risk and restricted external-tool access, a primary driver of unsanctioned "shadow AI" usage in healthcare. The dissertation evaluates and improves this boundary through three contributions:

- **ASQ-PHI:** an adversarial synthetic-data benchmark for clinical PHI de-identification, evaluating rule-based, cloud-based, vector-based, and on-device (Ollama) approaches (peer-reviewed; AMIA 2026 Amplify poster).
- **K-anonymity decay analysis** quantifying identifiability erosion across multi-turn clinical LLM conversations (peer-reviewed).
- **Local PHI Scrubber:** a Chrome extension performing on-device, human-in-the-loop PHI redaction using small language models (3–4B parameters), enabling zero data transmission while preserving access to external tools (AMIA 2026 Amplify oral presentation, Session CI25).

## Research & Clinical Experience

**UTMB / Microsoft AI Hackathon Participant — Medical Imaging Cohort Creation with Natural Language** · *September 2025 – Present*
- Selected for a collaboration between UTMB and Microsoft Research.
- Contributed to an NLP-based cohort-discovery platform addressing a critical bottleneck: traditional imaging cohort creation requires weeks of coordination between PACS administrators, data-warehouse teams, and radiologists.
- Participated in a semantic-search architecture using medical image embeddings and radiology report indexing on Azure.
- Collaborated with Microsoft engineers on a multimodal pipeline combining DICOM metadata, HL7 clinical data, and unstructured imaging reports.
